I was a very insecure person growing up, especially about my physical features. Though my mom loved me, she was often very critical of my looks. I do not blame her because she also grew up in an environment where she was criticized a lot.

Because my mom often compared me to other women, I sought validation from others and compared myself with others.

If my mom or boyfriends didn’t call me beautiful, I felt ugly. I would replay the thought that I was not beautiful till I got to a place where I truly believed I was not.

There were seasons in my life when I tried to look a certain way to please my boyfriend. It was not until I was 25 years old that I learned to find my identity in Christ and understand that my worth is found in what God says about me in the Bible and not from others’ opinions of me.

What is My Identity in Christ

The first thing you need to know about your identity in Christ is that you are loved.

You belong to Jesus. 

From beginning to end, the Bible shows God’s constant pursuit of His people. Sin separated us from God, but God sent His only begotten Son (who is spotless and perfect) to die for you so that you could be His.

Isaiah 54:5 says, “For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is His name; And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel;” You are God’s bride, His chosen and beloved one.

God also says we are children of God. Galatians 3:26 says, “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”

What does this all mean? It means that you are loved, wanted, and cared for by the God of the universe, the King of kings and Lord of Lords.

It is okay to want to be loved by people, but don’t let your identity be in how people love or treat you. People are not perfect, but God is perfect, so only His love is perfect (1 John 4:18).

Think about what being a wife and a child means. A wife is to be faithfully loved, cherished, and protected by her husband, and a child by the parent.

When we do not feel loved, or our circumstances are not good, we must remember our identity in Christ. We are a child of God and the bride of Christ.

Jesus Loves you

Jesus loves you so much. Will you believe this truth?

When you think no one is watching you, know that you are the apple of God’s eye (Psalm 17:8).

When you think no one is thinking about you, remember that God’s thoughts towards you outnumber the grains of sand (Psalm 139:18).

When you feel like no one is pursuing you or praying for you, know that Jesus is constantly interceding for you (Romans 8:34).

When you feel like no one cares about you, know that Jesus invites you to cast your cares on Him (1 Peter 5:7).

When you feel like no one is here to protect you, know that Jesus is your Shepherd (Psalm 23:1).

Whenever the thought, “Jesus does not love me,” comes to your mind, be intentional to renew your mind with God’s truth. Above are just a few examples of who God is to you.

Nothing can separate you from God’s love (Romans 8:38-39). God’s love is not something we need to always feel, but we must always know. By our understanding and revelation of His love, we will then experience His love.

We live in a sinful world, so bad things are bound to happen, but we can rest in our identity in Christ and look at what God’s Word says about us.

Made For Intimacy with God

You may never understand why Jesus loves you, but the truth is He does. What is man that You are mindful of him….(Psalms‬ ‭8‬:‭4‬).

God cares so much about you. In fact, God made you and me to have intimacy with Him.

He wants us to know Him intimately and not only by what someone tells you about Him. He wants a unique relationship with you that is different than His relationship with others. Every parent has a unique relationship with their children, and a wife has a relationship with her husband that is not the same as others.

What is spoiling your joy and intimacy with Jesus? Is it worry? Are there lies that you are believing? Is it greed or selfish ambition? Is it lust or offense?

These sins may seem “small” because they are just wrong thinking and feelings, but these sinful thoughts or “little foxes” do ruin our intimacy and relationship with Jesus.

Our heart was made to be a vineyard that bears fruit for us to taste and see God’s goodness.

Song of Solomon 2:15 says, “Catch us the foxes, the little foxes that spoil the vines, for our vines have tender grapes.”

It’s impossible to delight in God and live out our identity in Christ when we allow the little foxes of sin into our lives.

Will you catch the foxes that may be spoiling your relationship with God? What truths in the Bible do you need to declare over your life and choose to believe?

Instead of looking for love from an imperfect world and imperfect people, look for love from a God who is perfect and eternal. Jesus loves you. So remember, find your identity in Christ.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for loving us and inviting us into intimacy with You. Thank You for making a way for us to be reconciled to God through Your sacrifice on the cross. Help me to live daily knowing my identity in You and how much You love me.

God has been renewing my mind and re-defining my value with His truth. I always saw my value in comparison to others because I grew up constantly being compared to others.

If I wanted to feel beautiful, I had to be more beautiful than anyone else in the room. If I wanted to feel accomplished, I had to strive to accomplish more than everyone else in the room. I would try to find flaws in others to make myself feel better, however, this never helped because it only highlighted my insecurity.

I eventually learned that I was viewing my value from the wrong eyes instead of my Heavenly Father’s eyes. God showed me that He didn’t want me to live each day feeling insecure and not good enough. He reminded me that we are all beautiful because we were all made by the hands of God. Psalm 139:14 says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

The world may have a definition of what makes someone beautiful or successful, but God doesn’t because He has made each of us unique and calls us beautiful.

God showed me that I didn’t have to compare myself with others or try to be the best. He opened my eyes to see that there is no such thing as being better than anyone because we all have different gifts and talents that He has chosen to give us. Romans 12:4-5 says, “For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ, we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.”

God has given each of us different gifts and we were all meant to work together for His kingdom purposes. We each have our own unique place in God’s plan. He has chosen and positioned us where we need to be. We are not positioned where we are because we are better than others, but simply because God has chosen us there.

There’s no need to compete for a position or feel jealous when someone got the position you wanted. If you didn’t get the position you wanted, trust that God has a different position for you. Instead of competing with one another, let us appreciate one another. Competition leaves no room for love but is only self-centered. God tells us in Philippians 2:3-4, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

God has chosen each of us to serve Him and to bear fruit (John 15:16). We get to serve God and bear fruit in our own unique way. Let us all remember the assignment that we all have which is to glorify God in all that we do. God says in Isaiah 43:7, “everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”

God has created you for a purpose and chosen you to live for Him. Will you look to Him for your value and purpose? 

We don’t need to earn our value because our value is found in being a child of God. God is faithful and will take you where He wants you to be. Romans 8:28 reminds us that God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose.

God is always working for our good. We don’t need to take His job of placing us where we need to be. As we focus on loving God and others, we will find our place in His kingdom and see that we have been chosen by Him. You are uniquely made, loved, and chosen. So remember, you are chosen by God.

I’ve grown up most of my life being very self-conscious of the way I looked. I might have been perceived as confident and bold on the outside, but on the inside, I was hiding my insecurities behind the makeup and fashionable clothes I would wear.

I would look at myself every day and wished I would be like that girl who had a better chin, or that girl who had a better smile, and the list of my hated features would continue on and on. I spent most of my days fretting over how to be more beautiful or how I could be perceived as more confident.

But no matter how much makeup I would put or how many cute outfits I would wear, at the end of the day, I still found my same shy and insecure self.

One truth that finally set me free from the lies that were in my head was when I read Psalm 139:13-14 which says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful..”

More makeup didn’t solve my insecurities, but it was in knowing that a perfect and loving God made me. You are the creation of the most high God, the best maker out there. He created your inmost being – every inch of you was made to perfection. You are God’s best work, his masterpiece.

What you see as imperfections are God’s perfections. 

When you look at yourself in the mirror, what do you see? Do you see imperfections or perfections? Do you see yourself as a mess-up or a masterpiece? We can be our own worst enemies, nit-picking every little detail that we hate about ourselves. But do you know who made those very little details that you call as imperfections?

A perfect and loving God.

None of us would dare bash the work of the best artist in the world, then how much more should we look down on God’s creation? When we look down at ourselves, we are looking down at God’s beautiful work in us.

You are God’s masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10) – don’t let your view of imperfections tell you otherwise. The enemy will try to use your beauty against you, but remember that God created you to embrace your beauty, not to chase after it.

Don’t waste away your efforts chasing after the beauty that is already in you. God’s works are all wonderful and beautiful, which includes you. Don’t let the world define your beauty because God has already defined the beauty in you. So remember, you are a masterpiece.

Prayer: Lord, help me to love myself, knowing that your beautiful hands have made me into who I am today.
